Neat to See This at Home Depot

I was at a Home Depot recently in mid-Missouri while visiting my folks and as I walked into the front door I immediately noticed this TwisterPod storm shelter by Survive-A-Storm Shelters:

As I was intrigued I took a closer look:

Sadly, there isn’t anything inside to get excited about. Just two seats on either side of the shelter and that’s it. The brochure says you can fit four inside and, yes, you could but it would be a tight fit!

Made from 3/16″ cold rolled steel, I’d imagine this shelter could take a bit of a beating and keep you safe inside. The shelter is likely small enough to be mounted in the corner of a garage or other inconspicuous place.

At a cost of almost $3,700, however, it feels a tad expensive for the amenities provided, lol. The good news is that the price includes free delivery and installation, neither of which I would want to tackle myself.

It took me a moment to notice their other shelter which happened to be sitting right next to the above shelter, the Extreme model:

Now this is more what I’d be interested in for a storm shelter! It’s obviously larger, made with 1/4″ level 2A ballistic rated steel, and according to the brochure can fit eight, though that would be stretching comfort levels for sure.

Here’s the insides:

The picture doesn’t quite do the insides justice. There’s a bench seat that opens up to allow space for gear and supplies which is definitely nice. There’s also a spot for a fan, a television (not sure how that’s supposed to work), and a removable vent through which one could escape… all nice features.

The price, as you might suspect, is a bit more than the smaller shelter at almost $5,300 but does include delivery and installation. Speaking of which delivery is stated as “four weeks or less” so if you’re looking for this to be installed by the weekend you may well be out of luck.

I’d suspect, however, that you could conceivable build a storm shelter for less if you contracted it out. Of course, that’s just a guess on my part.

Regardless, if you live in tornado-alley or otherwise fear being crushed by falling debris (I may need one of these with all the tall trees around my house) then a storm shelter may be just for you. 🙂

How much to move my Home Depot round 4k shelter from tuscaloosa to gulf shores?

  2. According to their description (found here https://survive-a-storm.com/residential-storm-shelters/) they say: “…complying with FEMA 320 Guidelines to provide near absolute protection against 250 MPH EF5 tornado winds.”

LMAO, designed to “shear the sheeple” of their CA$H!!!

I have been in construction for a long time, I could do a lot More for LESS!

    1. That’s why I said at the end “I’d suspect, however, that you could conceivable build a storm shelter for less if you contracted it out. Of course, that’s just a guess on my part.”

        That is a Good Guess!
I’m not sure I would build one for someone for _much_ less, however 😉

I’d imagine they anchor it to a concrete slab, for safety. That is why
they have the big bolted flange on the bottom!

“It’s so expensive you’ll be BLOWN AWAY” or not.

That seems incredibly expensive for either one. What specific pressures are they designed to withstand, do they say?
