99 Capacities Series – Capacity #36: Maintain Appropriate Feminine Hygiene

The thirty-sixth capacity that I introduce in my eBook is that you must [be able to] maintain appropriate feminine hygiene. In it I state that:

You must “maintain appropriate feminine hygiene. Ladies have additional hygiene concerns that men do not. Be sure to stock all appropriate supplies.”

Fortunately, this is another very simple capacity to prepare for. Stock plenty of tampons and/or sanitary napkins for each menstruating female in your family/group. An added benefit to doing so is that they are supposed to be sterile (read this Doom And Bloom article about Sterile vs Clean) and can be used as a very effective wound dressing; in addition, they are apparently stocked by many EMTs because they are so effective.

If you want to be extra prepared you could also choose to purchase reusable sanitary napkins or even make your own. The only consideration I would include if doing so is that you should have plans in place to boil these pads in order to effectively sanitize them after use; in fact, the same could be said for reusable diapers and even underwear, all of which can be exposed to blood, urine, and fecal matter. Alternatively, it might be ok to bleach them and air dry in the sun in order to expose them to UV rays.

In order to extend the life of pads and napkins I would store them just like anything else you want to keep for long periods of time: in a cool, dark, dry place. If you store them in a mylar bag with oxygen absorber I would imagine that would be even better.

Keep an eye out for sales and coupons and you’ll be set for years to come.

Note: This post is part of an ongoing series detailing the ideas from my free eBook, The 99 Capacities You MUST Acquire BEFORE Disaster Strikes You!, which you may freely download here.
