99 Capacities Series – Capacity #65: Replace/Recharge Flashlight and Lantern Batteries

The sixty-fifth capacity that I introduce in my eBook is that you must replace and/or recharge flashlight and lantern batteries multiple times. In it I state that:

You must “Replace and/or recharge flashlight and lantern batteries multiple times. Flashlight and lanterns will be used significantly more often post-disaster than they are now. You MUST have a means of replacing (and preferably recharging) the batteries that this equipment uses. Be sure you know what kind of batteries they use (e.g., AA, C, D?) and have enough on hand to replace them a few times over.”

It should go without saying–even though I did–your batteries WILL be used up drastically more than they ever were now. As such, it behooves you to have more than enough batteries on hand to replace batteries in your flashlights and lanterns two or three times at least. I would encourage several times over but I understand if you can’t afford to do so. Of course, a pack of 100 AA-cell batteries will go a long way:

Likewise, a few 12 packs of D-cell batteries should make your Rayovac lantern run for quite a long time:

Of course, you really need to know your own equipment and battery needs. I don’t know if your equipment uses AA, AAA, C, or D batteries, or maybe even something else. I’m just guessing that AA and D-cell batteries are what you need. Whatever it is your equipment uses, ensure you have more than enough to see you through.

With that thought in mind, you really need to add it all up. Seriously, add up how many batteries all of your equipment uses… you might be surprised. I prefer to have enough batteries on hand to replace batteries in all of my flashlights, lanterns, AND radios (even though they’re not a part of this discussion today) at least two or three times over. I understand that’s not always easy to do but I try. That way, even if I don’t end up using all of my flashlights or radios then I should have more than enough batteries to work a portion of the equipment I own. Make sense?

I also mentioned the ability to recharge batteries. In this case, it’s about stocking enough rechargeable batteries such as these Eneloop AA-cell batteries:

…and a means to charge them, such as a DC-powered battery charger:

As you might suspect, there are other ways to charge batteries, such as with a solar powered system, but for the majority of us this will be the easiest setup. Unlike alkaline batteries, I wouldn’t stockpile too many rechargeable batteries. Consider just enough to run your most useful flashlights and radios for a start and move on from there.
