It’s a little known fact that a soldier who lists his race as ‘Gnome’ is allowed the wear of alternate, pointy headgear on quasi-religious grounds as well as the growth of facial hair.
However, AR 670-1 does give commanders in the field the option of requiring gnomes under their command to be cleanshaven if they are operating in an environment where the wear of a protective mask may be called for.
