A headlamp could be one of the more important items to include in any survival situation, especially your bug out bag. Why? Well, we’ve become accustom to the need for light and equally important… you’ll have your hands free to do other things like… saving yourself!
If you’ve ever looked at headlamps at your local sporting goods store, chances are you’ll be overwhelmed. There are MANY alternatives. I’m willing to bet that most of these headlamps would serve you well.
If you’re like me, however, you’ll want something that is truly functional, yet cost effective. The eGear eQ2 headlamp is certainly that. Although it was more expensive when I purchased mine, at less than $10 online, you’ll be pressed to find a better price. Unfortunately, they’re hard to come across. You can find it’s successor, the eGear 3 LED & Krypton Head Lamp (Black Case), at Amazon.com for about $25.
So, what about the eGear eQ2? I’ve had the opportunity to use it several times both backpacking and camping. I’ll tell you I like mine a lot. It’s very lightweight (about an ounce or two), comfortable to wear (I’ve worn mine for over an hour and forgot I had it on), very good on batteries (I haven’t changed mine yet after many hours of use by me and my kids), and has a relatively strong beam of light. The only drawback I can find is that I cannot adjust the width of the beam of light. Besides that, if you haven’t yet purchased a headlamp then I urge you to do so. You’ll be pleased even if the only time you find to use it is after a disaster.
