I’ve owned a Leatherman Wave Multi-tool for years. I’ve carried it on my belt strap everywhere I go. In fact, I considered it nearly as essential as my pocket knife and car keys. I can’t tell you how many times I didn’t go to my toolbox because I had this multi-tool with me. Granted, there are other options (many of which are also made by Leatherman) but I would be hard-pressed to trade in my Wave.
So, why the Leatherman Wave?
Simple… it seems to always have the tool I needed when I needed it. It’s incredibly well-made. The tools also lock in place, which is a huge plus. Suffice it to say that with pliers, various screwdriver bits, knives, and an assortment of other useful tools (such as scissors and the bottle opener) I’ve found plenty of uses for mine and still do to this day. (Visit Leatherman’s Wave product page for a detailed description if you like.) And at a cost of less than $60 online (for the tool and sheath) you can’t go wrong. It’s made from durable stainless steel, includes the nylon sheath, and hasn’t missed a beat for me yet.
I would suspect that Leatherman’s other multi-tools are just as durable and dependable. If the Wave doesn’t fit your needs then look to Leatherman’s other multi-tool lineup… you’ll definitely find what you’re looking for.
With respect to emergency preparedness, however, I would still recommend the Wave or something that includes many modern day tools (e.g., screwdrivers, scissors, etc) because it is precisely these tools that are most likely to be needed when you don’t have them. Multi-tools with an assortment of knives may seem like what you want, but I would suggest otherwise. While the Wave does include knives, that’s not the purpose of a MULTI-TOOL! So long as you choose to carry a sturdy pocket knife, you’re in good shape. Include a multi-tool for it’s intended purpose: the tools.
