Sun Oven Sunday – Pepperoni and Cheese Pizza

I’ve been meaning to get back into using my sun oven and, fortunately or not, it took going camping to do it. In fact, I wasn’t planning on using my sun oven at all while we camped but I brought it anyway and since the sun was out we figured we would try to make pizza just for grins.

We actually ended up making two small pizzas in pie baking tins. Overall, it worked out relatively well–it was edible–but not quite what we’re accustomed to in a pizza mostly because the crust never browned and, therefore, wasn’t crunchy. I can’t say it was doughy either but definitely not normal. Regardless, it tasted good and that’s what matters!

Making the pizza was simple enough, press out the dough:

Spread on pizza sauce and pile on cheese and pepperoni:

Place in the sun oven:

The directions say not to pre-cook the dough so we didn’t the first time and because the sun oven was running around 325 degrees (rather than 425 per the directions) we let it cook for a bit longer, let’s say at least several minutes. Here it is when finished:

I know you can’t tell but the dough, though cooked, wasn’t very crunchy and we considered putting it back in the sun oven for a bit but I figured that wouldn’t do any good. So, we tried another pizza but choose to pre-cook the dough for at least several minutes and even let the pizza stay in longer than the first one and, strangely enough, the second pizza dough seemed “doughier” than the first… go figure.

Anyway, when you’re hungry and want a hot pizza… I don’t think there was any complaining. 🙂

What about using a pizza stone that could fit in the sun oven that could be heated up before the pizza was added?

I am thinking pizza might cook better in a few other ways, all using a pizza stone that is pre-heated–on a fire on a rack, on a gas grill, or even in a smoker. All would be preheated so that the stone would be warmed and ready to cook the pizza.

    1. That’s a good thought too… just have to find our pizza stone. 😉

For a crispier crust use a dark pie or baking pan. There’s actually a dark metal pizza pan with holes in the bottom designed especially for crispy crusts. That way the toppings don’t get over cooked before the crust is crisped. Love my Sun Oven!

    1. Good thoughts… didn’t know those pans existed… will try it some day. Thank you.

  3. That looks delish! You are making me want to pull out my Sun Oven on Sunday and follow along!
