If you did not see a message requesting you “enable macros” or “enable content” then your Macro Security Setting is set to “High”. As such, Microsoft Excel will NEVER ask you to enable macros and simply disable all macros instead.
To change this behavior in earlier versions (such as Excel 2002 or 2003), on the file menu navigate to: Tools -> Macro -> Security… then on the Security Level tab select the “Medium” setting; doing so will always ask to enable macros upon starting ANY Excel file that contains macros, including this one.
To change this behavior in later versions (such as Excel 2007 or 2010), on the file menu navigate to: Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center Settings -> Macro Settings then from the available options select “Disable all macros with notification”; doing so will always ask to enable macros/content upon starting ANY Excel file that contains macros, including this one.
After making the changes above, you will need to close Excel completely, re-open this workbook, then say “Yes” to enabling macros. Rest assured that there are no harmful macros; they are ONLY needed to make this workbook more functional and user-friendly.
ANOTHER POSSIBILITY:
The only other reason I can see that your buttons might not work is if you have Excel in “Design Mode”. If you do not already have the Control Toolbox toolbar showing, in earlier versions, navigate to View -> Toolbars -> Control Toolbox; in later versions, navigate to ???. The first available button should be the one to turn “Design Mode” on and off. Click this button to turn off “Design Mode” (it should not look depressed).
