Take The Time to Learn New Things, Even if NOT Survival-Releated

Since I haven’t been writing in recent months, I found new “old” ways to fill my time, namely learning new things! Although they’re not survival-related, I’ve realized over this time how much I missed learning stuff.

You see, before we moved to Washington state nearly a year and a half ago, I regularly choose to watch various documentaries and shows on channels like The Discovery Channel, The History Channel, and The Science Channel. In fact, I often had something on television even while I was doing other things such as writing blog posts… that’s probably why I had all the spelling mistakes. 😉

And, yes, I know watching television isn’t the best of plans but I make an exception for these types of learning shows. Even though some of them may not be the most educational they’re certainly better than typical sitcoms and reality shows.

Recently, however, I’ve gotten into iTunes Podcasts. While I used to listen to The Survival Podcast regularly, these days I’ve moved on to other interesting topics, namely history and science, both of which I happen to love learning about.

Two podcasts, in particular, that I enjoy are a one on Revolutions and one titled Stuff You Should Know, both of which are on iTunes. There are a couple of others that I’ve started, such as A History of the World in 100 Objects (by the BBC) and Stuff You Missed in History Class (also by the same group of folks that do Stuff You Should Know).

I should point out that a few of these podcasts have a left-leaning slant but if you can choose to get past some of that you may learn a few things. I can say that I’ve learned quite a bit and find them very interesting as they cover a wide array of topics (the “Stuff You Should Know” and “History of the World in 100 Objects” podcasts) whereas the others are obviously about history.

I’ve found the Revolutions podcast quite interesting. The first series focused on the British revolutions of the 1600’s, the second is on the American revolution, and the third is on the French revolution. I’m currently listening to the American revolution podcast. Beyond that, I’ve probably listened to well over a hundred of the “Stuff You Should Know” podcasts and have several hundred more to go.

Anyway, that’s enough about what I’ve been doing of late. The ENTIRE POINT in all of this was to (1) realize how much I’ve missed learning stuff and (2) to get you to do the same.

In fact, I’m willing to bet that one of the two biggest reasons why I choose to get into prepping–now that I think about it–is because there was (and still is) so much to learn! No doubt, you could literally spend a lifetime learning anything and everything about life skills, all through survivalism. Recently, though, I’ve been learning less and less about survivalism skills and needed to find something new or, at least, to have a change of pace for a while.

Regardless of whether you’re learning survival-related skills and knowledge or just anything you wanted to learn, by all means please take the time now while you can and while you have the enthusiasm to do it. After all, there’s no time like the present to do what you’ve always wanted to do… assuming, of course, that you enjoy learning.

Remember that there are so many ways to learn, from YouTube videos to podcasts, hands-on learning, from a friend or sibling, reading online… and let’s not forget books.

Take the plunge and try to learn something you’ve always wanted to but were afraid to take the time. Or, try something new… it could be the best new thing you’ve learned in a long time.

  1. I’ll check out those podcasts…I am always looking for some more variety.

On learning more, I’ve been reading a lot more recently and I love it. I never thought I would develop into a book worm…I’m reading 1 fiction & 1 non fiction book at a time to suit my mood.
