10 Item Worth More Than Gold When SHTF

This is a long video, so I won’t blame you if you don’t want to sit and watch it all. But as somebody who has been preparing for a long time (SensiblePrepper, in this case) he has a lot of knowledge. This video goes beyond the basics of water and food that we all know and love. Specifically, he details ten items that are potentially worth more than gold when SHTF. My summary of his recommendations follow below the video, with some comments. Enjoy!

  1. Antibiotics: Having some way to treat infections is vital, as minor injuries could become major crises without medical help. This includes prescription antibiotics (with awareness of shelf life and allergies), animal/fish antibiotics (which are often the same product as those prescribed for humans, requiring research), and natural options like colloidal silver and medicinal herbs.
  2. Batteries: Necessary for items like flashlights, radios, and smoke detectors, especially in a grid-down situation. Standard alkaline batteries have a long shelf life (around 10 to 12 years), and it is recommended to rotate them out. Lithium ion batteries also have a good shelf life.
  3. Feminine hygiene products and condoms: Feminine hygiene products (pads or tampons) are valuable commodities, have a good shelf life, and can be used for bartering or as absorbers for liquids in injury situations where sterility is required. Condoms are included as great birth control, which is essential when medical help is limited in a grid-down situation, and they last for a long time.
  4. Hand tools: Having good hand tools is essential for fixing and repairing things. Recommended tools include channel lock pliers, standard pliers, wire cutters, snips, bolt cutters, a hammer (especially a good ball-peen hammer for various uses), screwdrivers (flathead and Phillips head, sometimes interchangeable ones), a chisel, punches, and a good saw (like a Silky saw). Emergency shut-off tools, such as sillcock wrenches (for opening spigots without handles), are also beneficial. (FYI, I discuss 67 useful tools and related supplies in my survival toolbox book if interested.)
  5. Heirloom seeds: Non-hybrid seeds are important because they reproduce, unlike many hybrid seeds, allowing for self-sustainability and continued gardening. While they have a limited shelf life and may yield less than hybrids, they allow you to grow fresh food, supplements, and reproduce seed by maintaining a garden.
  6. Repair supplies/Tape: This category covers various materials for fixing things. Specific items mentioned are duct tape, Gorilla tape, military 100 mph tape, fiber tape (which has strands for strength), repair wrap (which hardens and is something I was unaware of), safety pins, Flex Seal, and paper clips. Additionally, he emphasizes having repair kits for firearms (including cleaning kits and replacement parts) and sewing kits (with needles, thread, and patches for clothing and packs). Zip ties are also highlighted as incredibly useful for countless applications; I think he’s done videos on their many uses if you want to look for it. (And again, I wrote a book about many useful supplies for SHTF titled, Sold Out Forever if you’d like my take on the topic.)
  7. Supplies for raising chickens (and livestock): Since stockpiled supplies are finite, having chickens and their associated supplies (feed, watering accessories, chicken wire) buys time and provides a renewable source of eggs and meat. Rabbits are discussed as a potentially better option because they reproduce quickly and are quieter.
  8. Boots/sturdy shoes and socks: Good sturdy shoes or boots are extremely important. He recommends keeping extra pairs of boots and having extra socks, as socks are perishable and crucial for protecting feet, especially when walking long distances in wet conditions.
  9. Fishing gear: Having fishing gear, including hooks, sinkers, weights, swivels, and tackle boxes, allows you to utilize fish as a food source, although game may become scarce due to overhunting; same logic applies to hunting anything.
  10. Traps (and hunting tools): Traps, such as predator traps or improvised traps, are necessary for harvesting game for consumption. This category also includes small game harvesting tools like air rifles (pellet rifles), which are quiet and powerful hunting tools for small game, preferable to drawing attention with gunfire. My addition: crossbows may be of use here, too.

Sorry to say but he’s just been hyped up. His gun reviews are okay, but he’s no more of a gun expert or a celebrity than IraqVeteran or CanadianPrepper or some of those bimbos and Dumbos on YouTube that want to take the easy path to fame and fortune rather than earn and learn about a subject or industry.

They’re just people from other walks of life who appear to be experts due to marketing hype and allowed a foot in the door, but don’t have any advanced or insider knowledge. Companies hope that letting such people due reviews will produce potential sales.

Honestly, I have learned more from better people on YouTube.
