I’d never thought of using a beer keg for portable water storage, but these folks (in the video below) have switched from a hard plastic water storage container to a stainless steel beer keg and love it. But this idea is NOT cheap, since the 3-gallon keg they choose currently runs $120! Add in the tap and cleaning solution, and we’re talking about a hefty expense for only three gallons of water. But they apparently go camping a lot in their van, so maybe it’s worth the expense.
As a prepper, however, I would just buy an Aquatainer and get twice as much water for a fraction of the cost. It’s a BPA-free, food-safe container that will last years so long as you don’t leave it exposed to sunlight for long periods. In fact, you could buy a pack of 4 Aquatainer jugs for less than the 3-gallon keg.
Although I like the ingenuity, and there are certainly some benefits to the beer keg (like the cleanliness aspect), I just don’t see how the benefits outweigh the upfront cost.
What do you think? Is this worth it?
