This topic has been on my mind again recently. And, while the video below is about a year old, the advice is still valid. Unfortunately, his advice only works if (1) the blast is not very near you, (2) the strike is limited to a single warhead, and (3) you’re home when it happens!
While he focuses mainly on avoiding the fallout debris from contaminating your home or survival shelter, it’s useful to also understand that if the blast is near enough, then the dangers from radiation become highly problematic, too. In this case, you’ll want mass between you and the outside world. Thus, surviving in a basement or lower-level of your home, away from windows and doors, is the best plan … sort of like sheltering from a tornado.
(And if you need to do all this, then you’re going to want more than a bucket of bathroom supplies and some plastic sheeting. I discuss how to shelter in place properly inside my survival course, if you’d like to know the details.)
Sadly, these days I’m feeling like the world is going to implode with the way things are going overseas. The good news is that if nuclear war ever truly kicked off, you and I won’t be around much longer to care about it…
