3.5kWh DIY Solar Generator for $650

What an interesting video. Who would’ve guessed that you could fit so much battery storage capacity into such a small space as a toolbox? Sure makes you wonder what you’re really paying for with those commercially-made solar power stations. Oh, that’s right: reliability, engineering, design, safety, warranty, probably better parts, and a bit of profit too. But, if you don’t care about any of that stuff…

Now, this clearly isn’t an easy DIY build as it requires quite a few parts (see the video description on YouTube for a complete list), knowledge of electrical concepts, and some tools that not everyone has such as the spot welder. After all of the work this guy put into the project you may just be better off purchasing a Goal Zero Yeti Power Station and be done with it.

If you do still want to build your own power station, I really wonder if there’s an easier way to source the lithium batteries than tearing apart hundreds of old modem batteries like he did? Plus, there’s a lot of work involved with welding them together. I’d say that was half the video; I’d imagine there has to be a better option, even if it’s a bit more expensive.

With that in mind, if you need some inspiration to get your DIY solar plans off the ground this is a good video to get your going, but I wouldn’t start here if you’re new to the idea. Remember, too, that you’ll still need to purchase a solar panel or two if you don’t already have something which adds to the overall cost of the project….
