Safer DIY 1LB Propane Tank Refill Solution

There are two videos you should watch below. The first is the original video where he shows what I’ve done in the past, which is to refill the “disposable” cannisters. But, there’s a safer method using cannisters which are intended to be refilled; that videos is the second one below.

Video #1: Using “Disposable” Cannisters

Like he says in the intro, these little cannisters are expensive! So, it makes sense to want to refill them. Thankfully, there’s an easy way to do so using the larger 5-gallon tanks using a simple adapter. (Better yet, get an adapter with a gauge on it.)

One important aspect to remember is that you cannot transport them after they have been filled or you’ll face a ridiculously large fine and possibly imprisonment. That said, here’s how it’s done…

Video #2: The Safer Cannisters

Although quite expensive initially, if you intend on refilling the small one-pound cannisters regularly, get these refillable cannisters as shown here…

Good videos. I have seen a couple of others that were clear and provided safe methods.

I think the focus on getting a complete fill is pointless. It’s true that if you were camping out or bugging out that you’d want your canisters to be full so that you have as much propane with as few canisters as possible and thus to reduce how many you have to carry, but getting 15 oz or close to 16 oz/1 pound is good enough when you have a 20 lb. tank or larger at home or in your vehicle to refill from.

And you’re not disposing of the canisters or immediately recycling them or paying these ridiculous prices. Sadly, they are required which poses an inconvenience, but that’s just how it is. We have a small propane grill and the directions specifically state not to use a hose, but only canisters. That means no adapters to 20 lb. tanks. So we have to have some small tanks to use the grill. I’ll probably buy a refill kit very soon.

I think of the canisters as being similar to a rifle magazine. It doesn’t have to be full, but without one you can’t feed ammo into your firearm.
