Saving 70% or More on Printer Ink: Frugal Friday

If you’re still buying your printer ink at the local stores like Walmart and Best Buy you’re really missing out and worse yet… spending way too much money on printer ink. Instead, you should be shopping at discount retailers such as PrinterInkWarehouse.com and dozens of other places. Honestly, Amazon.com is where I still choose to buy most of my ink.

Now, in my opinion, there is no need whatsoever to purchase OEM toner. The stuff is WAYYYYYY too expensive and there’s no need when you can purchase aftermarket ink for a fraction of the cost!

Considering that most ink cartridges cost somewhere between $15-30 per cartridge in retail stores, you can easily save 50-70% or more if you only choose to purchase aftermarket ink, often called “re-manufactured” cartridges. Just search Amazon.com for your printer’s model and the word “ink” or “cartridge” and you’ll likely find what you’re looking for.

If you choose to purchase in bulk at one time then you can save even more! In fact, I’ve done this for years and have never looked back. The important thing to remember is that–assuming you have a printer from the 21st century–that the ink includes the chip. If the cartridge doesn’t have the chip then that is NOT what you want.

Moreover, do NOT purchase refillable cartridges, refill ink, refill sets or anything like that. I have tried this in the past and, though it does sort of work, it’s a big mess and doesn’t always work as expected. Eventually, I just gave up on the refillable cartridges and went with aftermarket (re-manufactured) ink purchased in bulk for my particular printer. I easily save 70% or more each time I buy.

It’s just a no-brainer these days. Perhaps the only additional stipulation I would mention here is to pay attention to the ink seller and ensure that they have a good rating if you purchase from Amazon.com, eBay.com, or other places where you can purchase from individual sellers.

Beyond that, consider how you use your printer ink. If you don’t have to print in color, don’t. Use black as it’s often much less expensive. Last, if you really don’t have to print whatever it is you think you have to print, don’t do that either! Oftentimes, that stuff just turns into recycled material and fast.

Hopefully this helps you to save money on your printing needs. And if you have any additional great ideas, I’d be grateful to hear them.

  1. Your blog is really useful for many people I think. Because many times I have found the useful information which was really important for me. Reading this in your post was good.

you failed to disclose one very important issue with used or remanufactured cartridges, many printers won’t see them as being installed or register the ink content, so you are always getting error or low on ink warnings or maybe your printer wont even print,,, this is a big problem and a real pain, cheaper yes but for me and my family, certainly not worth the hassle of dealing with problems every time we want to print something!!

    1. Seems you’ve had this problem in the past? Personally, I’ve never had this issue with re-manufactured toner that has the chip already installed but I have had this trouble with the refillable cartridges, that’s in part why I said stay away from the refills. If you purchase toner as I suggest and look for sellers with good ratings then in most cases you should have good luck. You’re right, it may not always work but I’d say it’s definitely worth a try at least once given the huge potential cost savings.
