September is National Preparedness Month – Get a Book for Free!

It totally slipped my mind that this month, September, is national preparedness month. I don’t know why we only get one month, or why the powers that be chose September, but I’ll take it. According to the internet:

It’s a nationwide observance established by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)’s Ready Campaign to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time. This annual campaign, which began in 2004, encourages individuals, families, businesses, and communities to take proactive steps to prepare for emergencies, including natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks. The month serves as a critical reminder that emergencies can occur without warning, and being prepared can save lives and reduce recovery time.

Yeah, no kidding? Disasters can strike without warning? Who would’ve guessed!

Apparently, this year’s theme is:  “Preparedness Starts at Home,” which:

…emphasizes that household readiness is the foundational element for broader community resilience. This theme underscores the responsibility individuals have to protect their families, pets, neighbors, and communities by taking action now. Key actions recommended include making a family emergency plan, building an emergency kit with supplies for at least three days, and staying informed about potential hazards like hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and extreme weather

Alright, I can mostly get onboard with this assessment. But, sadly, I see they’re still only recommending an emergency kit with three days of supplies. Perhaps they think people won’t take action if they said seven or fourteen days of supplies? Is that somehow too much all of a sudden?

Honestly, if the government started telling me to have more supplies because I shouldn’t expect help to be on the way for weeks or longer, then I might start to take their advice seriously! Knowing how wrong most government timeframes are would give me reason for extra concern, but I’m not a sheeple either, and I don’t think everything is going to be fine all the time.

Anyway, I won’t belabor my point. But I am glad that our overlords are doing something potentially useful.

And in an effort to do my part, I’m willing to offer anyone this month only (September 2025) one of my survival books for free. Just email me damian (at) rethinksurvival (dot) com. Tell me you read this post and which book you want and I’ll send it via email.

God bless.

The thing is you really hit the nail on the head. I watch a lot of zombie movies, and post-apocalyptic themes. The serious ones and also the comedy films. And some of them are total garbage, but many offer some food for thought and some focus more of the aspect of preparedness and survival than just running and killing.

The common focus in every one of them is fulfilling their basic needs and it starts with the lack of food, water, useful gear and poor to zero preparation. And thus, the people are always begging, searching and killing others for all the things they could have easily acquired, stockpiled and stored before the crisis began. This seems to happen in real life all the time. People neglect to prepare or to take action, thus they fail before anything happens. And they suffer for their lack of preparation.

We get these silly little 5- or 10-minute segments on the news where they go into somebody’s kitchen and they fill a plastic bin with a few cheap flashlights, a radio and a few other items and tell us that’s our emergency kit. It’s usually cheap crap that might last a few days rather than building a good quality and more complete kit ready for any disaster and able to help us survive a prolonged crisis.

    Hi Damian
I love your emails and always read them and nearly always the video and longer story unless its really USA specific – I’m in Australia.
Not sure which book but I have a lot of trouble rotating foods.
