Can You Really Use a Bicycle and Alternator to Power Anything?

The following two videos detail one man’s attempt at powering his home with only a bicycle and a car alternator. The first video details the setup and his thinking, while the second video shows his improvements to the system. He even tried using a washing machine motor as some commenters suggested, but went back to using the original car alternator setup. Sadly, the best he could muster was about 200 watts of power, which although capable of powering a few small electronics and possibly even charge a battery, isn’t nearly good enough to expend so much human power to do so. Ultimately, it’s best to stick with what works: solar, maybe wind, and hydro if you’re lucky enough to have it.

Well here’s the deal if you put this into a prepper’s perspective. It’s not terribly efficient, but let’s assume you have a decent setup and you can use the bicycle for exercise which makes sense if you actually plan to use a bike as regular transportation. Now when you exercise you can generate some power and if you have a few people they can all take turns pedaling for 15 – 20 minutes to keep in shape and you’ll be able to charge small items or increase your battery banks power. And every little bit helps. If you must remain indoors, this could be very helpful for health and morale.
