Watch This Before Buying a Mr. Heater Propane Space Heater

Are you in the market for a new space heater? There are many choices out there, from cheap models to very expensive ones, but price doesn’t necessarily line up with expectations. Which should you buy? And if you’re a prepper, should you bother with the Mr. Heater propane heater that many of us, me included, have for emergency preparedness?

I can tell you that I was surprised at the results. You can move to the end of the video where he grades the space heaters over a variety of dimensions, but if want to jump straight to the safety tests first, they start at about the 12:30 mark…

My Grandmother, Dads Mom, did not have central heat in her home. I grew up warming myself in front of her Dearborn natural gas burning free standing heaters. So the propane heater you tested, while it can be dangerous due to contact, is not an issue as long as you keep combustibles and kids a foot or two away. Plus they work during those times when you’re having to see by candle light.

I have used mine a couple of times, including during that “cool” spell a couple of Februarys ago that nearly completely broke the Texas power grid. I have always kept a carbon monoxide alarm close without a peep from it. It kept the 1,800 sq ft house warm during the rolling outages.

    1. Really? I’ve never seen a small portable heater able to keep an entire house warm. A room? Sure.

I have a Mr. Heater for use in an Amish outbuilding with no power. I have onl;y used it twice in 2 years so far, but now am getting ready to make the loft my fiber studio. The place is large, 12′ by 26 ‘(less walls) wwith a 4’ gable at each end and 2 shed dormers, all told there are 8 windows in the space. The Mr. Heater Buddy heater did well heating it the one time I have used it up there (starting temp was 30F). It’ll only be used when I am working in the space in winter. so will continue to use it , being mindful of safety.

Might try the Amazon Basic in the house bathroom, no heat there and out of the heat circulation pattern (house is primarily heated with a small wood stove). It stays wrm enought not to let pipes freeze, but makes for chilly exits from the shower or tub!

Oh, I grew up in an old VT farmhouse with a wood range in the kitchen in the ell, and a wood furnace in the cellar with just one register in the front hall. Didn’t have any other heat until winter of 1969-70.

    1. Glad to hear the Mr. Heater worked so well! I’ve only used mine a few times in an unheated garage and it did well enough. Just need to stockpile more propane.

Interesting video. We dry camp and only have Mr buddy heater, however, will sure make sure nothing is near it!! It sits in the middle of the room and is on a fireproof hearth rug….wont test the fireproofness, just cross our fingers and be careful
