Why Lithium Batteries Are So Dangerous

I came across this first video (there are two below) over the weekend and realized it was a good one to share. In it, the man demonstrates just what happens when a single AA-sized lithium battery is damaged in one of four ways: by being submerged in water, set on fire, punctured, and short-circuited.

Surprisingly, only two of the four caused catastrophic damage (being set on fire and being punctured) both with very scary results. Interestingly, being submerged in water wasn’t much of a problem, at least in his tests. And, to my surprise, short-circuiting the battery wasn’t a problem, either. But there’s a catch as to why, which is explained near the end of the video.

It should go without saying that you should NEVER try these experiments yourself! This is for your knowledge only. And I hope that it acts as a reminder of how powerful even a tiny out-of-control lithium battery can be.

In this second video, the man demonstrates how dangerous hot paraffin wax can be, especially if it’s cooled in cold water. The result almost makes lithium batteries look tame, lol. The surprisingly part? That hot, liquid wax doesn’t even need a spark to ignite. Here’s why…
