Yesterday I mentioned that we were going to do a “random” act of kindness day which was inspired by a person wanting to celebrate her 38th birthday a while back (here’s a link to her original article). Well, it turned out to be a success and, despite my best efforts otherwise, turned out to be an all day event.
My wife took the time to write it all down and, obviously, they weren’t all “random” acts–most were planned out–but the recipients were by-and-large random so I guess that counts. 🙂 If you haven’t done so already I would encourage you to try your own unselfish and “random” act of kindness… maybe this weekend.
Here’s what we did according to my wife:
- We made breakfast in bed for two family members
- Took 4 dogs for a walk
- Baked 14 dozen cookies to give away
- Took cookies to 3 neighbors we knew
- Took cookies to one new neighbor
- Gave cold water to two landscapers
- Took cookies to local shop owner
- Put around 140 inspirational quotes on people’s cars
- Took cookies to the post office
- Children opened a door for a lady at the store struggling to get through with her cart
- Took cookies to the bank
- Went to the local nursing home and gave staff cookies and thank you notes
- Visited 3 residents at the nursing home and gave them flowers
- Took cookies and thank you notes to another nursing care center staff
- Visited 2 residents at local nursing home and gave them flowers
- Dropped off a donation to an animal shelter
- Paid bus fare for 3 people
- Put money in the parking meters downtown (This one was cool. We saved at least two people from getting parking tickets.)
- Handed out water to people on street that looked hot
- Gave popsicles and bottled water out at local park
- Dropped off donations for a domestic violence shelter
- Gave people coins at laundry mat for laundry
- Gave a gift certificate to a customer at Panera
- Bought my mother dinner
- Took my boys to their favorite restaurant for dinner
- Put away people’s shopping carts at the grocery store
- Bought ice-cream for the car behind us in drive thru
- Gave water and popsicles out at another local park
- Took a treat to the boys best friend and flowers to my best friend
- After a long day, helped my sister edit her paper
Certainly some of it cost money but it was really the thought that counts! Hopefully this inspires at least a few of you to try it yourself. Have a great weekend.
