Last week I showed how we make 6-ingredient DIY whole wheat bread. Not only did we make more of that delicious bread that you really should try if you haven’t done so yet, we wound up making some super delicious homemade breadsticks too. These happen to be my father-in-laws “super secret” recipe… or something like that. All I know if that my wife likes them… a lot… and everyone else does too.
So that I can keep this a bit short, the ingredients are exactly the same as the referenced bread recipe with the addition of melted butter and granted Parmesan cheese.
How to Make Homemade Breadsticks
To make, you’ll do everything as with the whole wheat bread recipe up to removing the dough from mixing bowl. Once everything has been thoroughly mixed you’ll want to remove the mixture and place on a cutting board (or other clean flat surface) and let it rise for about 30 minutes. Next, melt about one-half cup of butter and pour onto a baking sheet:
Sprinkle granted Parmesan cheese on the butter (maybe 1/4 to 1/3 cup):
Now mix it together well and spread over the baking sheet:
Remove pieces of the bread dough and begin splitting it into palm-sized balls roughly about the size of two golf balls smashed together:
Roll each ball out into the shape of a breadstick and as you place it on the baking sheet roll it around in the butter/Parmesan mixture. When finished you’ll have a lot of breadsticks side by side like this:
Let the breadsticks rise for about 30 minutes or so and then bake at 350 Fahrenheit for about 25 minutes or until the tops start to brown:
Though I failed to take photo, you can and MOST definitely should now brush the tops with a bit more butter and sprinkle with MORE Parmesan. That REALLY makes them special. 😉
I think our homemade breadsticks lasted all of two days at most… they were THAT delicious.
