I certainly agree that most premade emergency kits, whether they be first aid kits or for your vehicle, are less than ideal. Do yourself a favor and go purchase quality items individually or, if possible, in bulk to save some money and split between multiple vehicles.
Also, like he says in the video below, it’s important to realize that the items you include in this kit could vary by time of year. That is, you should be including items to keep you warm if it’s winter. Personally, I tend to keep cold weather gear and supplies in my vehicles year-round because I have the space and I would encourage you to do so as well because you never know when a cold snap might hit or if there are others reasons why you might need it.
With that in mind, most of the items he includes are good choices and are items that I include in my kit, with a few exceptions. Remember that these items are about getting your vehicle going again and keeping you safe while doing so. It’s NOT about survival gear, per se, but if you want to cover that too then I would suggest you keep a bug out bag in your vehicle as well, I do. For winters then a compact sleeping bag is always a great idea (see below for specific recommendations).
One of the items he discusses near the end is a combination jump starter and air compressor, which is a bit bulky, in my opinion. I would just purchase a compact air compressor as well as a portable jump starter which is SO MUCH easier to use to jump start your vehicle as compared to using jumper cables, plus they hold a charge for a long time and can be used to power your phone and other electronics too.
Skip to about the 4:40 mark if you want to get to the heart of the discussion on gear and supplies, but his intro is good to listen to…
