When the power goes out, life can grind to a halt—especially if we’re unprepared for the downtime. Many people think of preparedness in terms of gear, food, and water, but an often-overlooked aspect is how to keep minds engaged (especially children) during extended power outages.
Let me be clear: a variety of offline entertainment options isn’t just a luxury—it’s an essential part of keeping morale high and ensuring mental well-being for everyone, including adults.
Why Entertainment is Important
Power outages are stressful. Whether they last for a few hours or a few days, the uncertainty of the situation can heighten anxiety. But one of the most effective ways to combat stress is by distracting ourselves with activities that allow us to relax and connect with others. The right mix of entertainment options can also prevent cabin fever, reduce arguments, and provide much-needed relief during a stressful time.
For adults, it’s about more than just keeping the kids occupied. As much as kids need stimulation, adults also benefit from moments of fun, teamwork, and even nostalgia found with games. Plus, if we don’t keep ourselves engaged, we run the risk of boredom, which can quickly lead to frustration and worse.
Think you’re going to be a busy beaver when times get tough? Sure, at times. You’ll have plenty to do, but that doesn’t mean you can (or should) ignore some much-needed downtime.
Indoor Entertainment Options
For those rainy days or cold nights when going outside isn’t an option, board games and books become your best friends.
Board Games: These are a wonderful way to bring people together. Not only do they help pass the time, but they also promote critical thinking, teamwork, and healthy competition. Classic board games, like Monopoly, Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, or even classic card games, like Uno or Solitaire, can keep kids and adults entertained for hours. More complex games like chess or strategy-based games, like Risk, are great for adults, offering an intellectually stimulating challenge that helps take minds off the stress of the power outage.
Books: Whether you prefer fiction, nonfiction, or educational material, having a collection of books that appeal to everyone in the household is essential. Consider setting aside a few reads in your preparedness kit, so they feel fresh when you pull them out. For young kids, make sure you have picture books or age-appropriate options. For adults, a mix of novels, how-to books, or even survival manuals (I’ve got several you should have in your library) can help pass the time productively. Look for clearance sales or ask friends and family if they have books they no longer want.
Puzzle Sets: Don’t underestimate the power of puzzles. Jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, and Sudoku books are not only relaxing but also great for keeping the brain sharp during downtime. They can be enjoyed individually or worked on as a group, providing a sense of accomplishment when completed.
Outdoor Entertainment
When the weather is on your side, taking the fun outdoors can be a great way to burn off energy, get some fresh air, and enjoy some physical activity.
Sports Equipment: A soccer ball, frisbee, or even a simple set of cones for obstacle courses can provide hours of fun. These outdoor activities offer more than just entertainment—they’re a great way to maintain physical fitness during a situation where your regular routine might be disrupted.
Group Games: Outdoor group games like tag, hide-and-seek, or even scavenger hunts can turn a dull day into an adventure. These games don’t require much in the way of supplies and are especially good for keeping kids moving and laughing. You can also pack small, portable items like a deck of cards, dice, or even a set of dominoes to bring traditional games outdoors.
Lawn Games: If you’ve got the space, fun outdoor games like cornhole, ladder toss, or even horseshoes can offer a competitive and physical outlet for both kids and adults. These games are simple, don’t require electricity, and provide a great way for family members to work together or challenge each other.
Keeping Small Electronics Charged
While you’re focusing on offline entertainment, it’s also important to keep some of your essential small electronics powered up. For safety, communication, and even entertainment, having the ability to charge phones, tablets, or handheld radios can be invaluable during an extended outage.
Solar Chargers: These are a must-have in any preparedness kit. Solar chargers are portable, easy to use, and work as long as you have access to sunlight. With a good quality solar charger, you can keep your phone charged for emergency communication or let the kids watch downloaded movies or play games on tablets when other activities have worn thin.
Portable Battery Packs: It’s smart to have a couple of fully charged battery packs stored away for emergencies. These can keep your phone or other devices going for several charges, ensuring you stay connected even when the sun isn’t out.
Additions to Your Entertainment Kit
In addition to games, books, and ways to charge your devices, there are a few other items that can make a power outage more bearable:
Lighting: Playing games or reading in low-light conditions can be frustrating without proper lighting. Keep several flashlights or headlamps handy, a lantern or two, along with extra batteries. This will allow everyone to have their own light source, making evening activities more enjoyable and less of a strain on the eyes.
Blankets and Pillows: When there’s no heat, staying warm becomes a priority. Pile up some blankets or sleeping bags and pillows in a central area to create a cozy spot for family members to gather. This can be especially helpful during colder months when conserving body heat is important.
Snacks: Don’t forget about snacks! While power outages might limit cooking options, keeping non-perishable snacks like trail mix, crackers, and fruit preserves on hand can make game night more enjoyable and keep energy levels up. But snacks are only a small part of a larger food storage strategy for when times get tough.
The Mental Health Aspect
In times of crisis, we often forget how essential mental well-being is to overall survival. A prolonged power outage can lead to heightened stress, anxiety, and even depression, especially if the situation feels uncertain. Having the right entertainment options on hand can help reduce stress and foster social connections, both of which are essential for emotional health during challenging times.
Engaging in games, reading, or outdoor activities creates moments of normalcy in what can feel like an overwhelming situation. These small breaks from reality can help everyone recharge emotionally, giving them the strength and resilience to face the challenges of an extended power outage with a clear mind. This is crucial for children and teens!
