DIY Gel Fuel: How to (Sterno)

I’d never considered what gel fuel was made of, but apparently it’s only three ingredients: calcium carbonate (antacid tablets, egg shells, or chalk), acetic acid (white vinegar), and alcohol (denatured alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, methanol, or grain alcohol). And while I’m not sure I’ll ever try this idea considering it’s just easier to buy Sterno cans, it’s always good to learn something new. Just be careful, wear safety gear, and use some common sense if you give it a go. Enjoy!

Yes, you’re correct. She doesn’t appear to be a very safe chemist. Also, she should have a fire extinguisher nearby. I don’t know why she added a couple of different chemicals to give the flame a color. That doesn’t seem very safe to me cuz if you’re going to use this to heat food, you could be adding potentially toxic ingredients to your food from these chemical.

    1. Don’t think she was doing this for the purpose of heating food, but yeah, no need to add potentially hazard chemicals to the mix!
