Don’t Power Your Refrigerator First During a Power Outage?

I appreciate thought experiments like this. But if lighting is your first priority, and it should be a top priority at night, there are better, cheaper, and easier ways than to use a power station. That’s why I recommend, for example, adding easily accessible lights by your bedside and emergency power outage lights in strategic locations, like the bedroom and hallway.

He also discusses charging phones and other useful rechargeable items (such as flashlights or radios), which is also reasonable, but I’ve long recommended ensuring you charge your phone whenever it gets to 50% power AND charging your phone at bedtime no matter the state of charge. And, if you opt for battery-powered radios and flashlights, then you don’t need to worry about topping off these devices.

The latter half of the video turns into a sales pitch for this brand of power station, discussing how it can power a toaster and microwave and whatever else. Watch it if you like; I have no experience with this brand. Still, the thinking is wise to reconsider powering the refrigerator first because of immediate personal safety (e.g., trip hazards in the dark) and communication needs (both incoming weather alerts and outgoing with family).

What do you think? Is there anything else that is more important than these? What about medical equipment?
