Egg Storage – Week 10 Results

Another week past, who would have guessed these eggs made it 10 weeks thus far! I think we’ve had a small change but maybe not a big deal. For starters, the mineral oil egg didn’t float (like normal) and didn’t smell funny either:

I then cracked the egg and began cooking it. As you can see, the yolk seems to be breaking down a bit but I’m not entirely sure if it’s just this egg or a trend… we’ll see next week:

I didn’t end up eating the egg as I tested it late last night and wound feeding it to the dog. He didn’t keel over so I guess that’s a plus. 😉

I’ve been following your experiment with keen interest. However, I reviewed everything from week one including comments, and I cannot find how you prepared your eggs (soaked the eggs in oil or dipped or brushed on ect. Nor can I discern how you are storing these eggs. On the counter, in the fridge, in a plastic or cardboard storage container)

    1. I thought I went through all of that from the start but I simply poured a half-cup or so of mineral oil into a cup (I think I used a measure glass), put on some latex gloves, and proceeded to dip each egg into the mineral oil, let it drip the excess off as much as I could and then put them back in the carton. Since then the eggs have been sitting out in the open in our basement. FYI, I also left out a carton of eggs that were NOT coated with mineral oil in order to compare how long they would last. Hope that clears it all up.

  2. It’s not the yolk itself that is breaking down, it’s the membrane around it. That’s how it works, breakdown from the outside in. The whites were probably a lot more watery, too. Don’t use the dog as a canary! They can eat rotten things and cat poop and not even get sick.

    1. Glad you clarified what’s breaking down. So, I assume it’s still ok to eat? As for the dog, the truth is that not only did I cook the egg late in the evening, I also left it on the stove too long (forgot about it) and it didn’t look that appetizing so I fed it the dog as he’ll eat just about anything, except onions. 😉
