I like to be clean shaven including my head and, more importantly, my wife prefers it. 😉 I’ve shaved for so long it would be utterly earth-shattering if I had a beard… or hair on my head. It’s just not natural! Or is it? After all, those Duck Dynasty guys pull it off, and fairly impressively if you ask me.
So, I started to wonder if there was some good reason to have a beard. I looked it up and the first thing I found was that more hair–especially facial hair–signifies higher testosterone levels which is important for attracting mates. Ok. I’m not so sure that’s a big attraction any longer for women in our modern societies but maybe it was important ages ago.
I then pried a bit further and wound up on sites like BiggerBetterBeards.org that offered mostly funny reasons why you should grow a big beard, including:
- It instantly turns any man into a badass
- Great for sledding
- It makes you appear smarter
- In times of crisis, people always flock to a bearded person
- You can hide things in it, such as weapons, tools, and snacks
…as well as a handful of other relatively silly reasons to have a beard.
Then I happened upon this article titled 5 lesser-known benefits of having a beard that actually had some interesting reasons to grow a beard, including (read the article for the details):
- Sun protection
- Blemish-free skin
- More masculinity
- Natural moisture
- Trapped allergens
Now we’re getting somewhere! These might actually be *good* reasons to have a beard. Not to mention that it saves money not buying razors and probably a bit of time each morning too by not needing to shave, though, a beard would still need cleaned.
I then found yet another article titled 10 Reason to Grow A Beard that actually included a few “survival” reasons to have a beard, including keeping you warmer and apparently it can be used as kindling (would love to see that one).
Here’s one last post I found that was pretty darn funny too: 22 Reasons Bearded Men Are Better. Of course, I really should be looking for reasons why shaved me are better but perhaps that’s a post for another day.
