Editor-at-Large, T.R., pointed out this link to me yesterday and though I still need to research it AND the device apparently isn’t even available for purchase yet, I really liked it and figured I would share it today. OFF Pocket™ is basically akin to an EMP case for your cell phone in that once inside the pocket your cell phone no longer receives or sends wireless signals. That said, it is NOT for EMP and I’m not sure if it would even be useful for such a situation, that’s just the best way I could see to describe how it works.
Here’s a brief description from their website: “To use the OFF Pocket™ simply place your phone inside the case and close it. Your phone is now OFF. Untrackable. Unreachable. Unbreachable. The OFF Pocket has been extensively tested on all major networks, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint. It is compatible with all mobile phone hardware including but not limited to iPhones, Android, Blackberrys, Nokia as well as all modern phone operating systems.”
One of my biggest concerns with this device is that it would quickly drain your battery life because the cell phone is constantly searching for a signal but according to their FAQ this might not always be the case: “The effect of the OFF Pocket™ on your phone is no different than being in a location with no service. Having no signal may slightly increase or decrease battery life depending on your phone’s hardware and software. Some phones will see an improvement in battery life since the phone is not transmitting data, while others may see a decrease in battery life because the phone continuously searches for signals. We will provide more data about this as research continues.”
You can read the rest of their FAQ on their site if you like but for those of us who really value their privacy, this idea might be just the thing for you! And, if anybody ever gets any experience with it I would love to hear about your experiences, good and bad.
