Oven Canning Crackers for Long Term Storage

Warning: I’m told this may be both unsafe and dangerous. Attempt at your own risk! See comments below.

I’ve never tried to can crackers for long term storage but if you don’t have kids who consume all snack foods as soon as you buy them, then this may be a good idea. I think I’ll give it a shot soon just for grins.

I did notice that at the end she used the vacuum foodsaver to remove excess oxygen from the jars after she cooked them in the over; I’m wondering if it wouldn’t have been better to remove the oxygen first and then cook them in the oven? I really don’t know the answer to that one.

You can skip roughly the first half of the video as that’s mostly just her adding crackers to the jars…

I have oven canned for years still using my walnuts from 5years ago and have never broke a jar in the oven. Have lost quite a few in my canners tho.so the method For canning depends on what you’re putting up for storing I can remember when they didn’t advise people to can meats or even vegetables without a pressure canner even tho my mother and grandmother did it all in a stove top boiler. It’s too bad more people don’t learn how to take care of themselves in stead of always thinking there will be a grocery on the corner.

Please note that “oven canning” ANYTHING is never a recommended method of food storage. It is highly advised by the FDA, all of the canning jar and product producers, and the County Extension Services to never use this method to store or preserve any food product. And, canning dry products in any manner, is also never recommended by any of the above experts. Be advised that people that claim that this is a safe method have made this claim through word of mouth, not through any official approval. So I guess the question here is, “Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya?”
