The Copper Forever Candle Heater

It’s so cold outside that I can’t think about anything besides staying inside where it’s warm, lol. But even the indoors can become frigid and dangerous given a long enough outage. Consider a copper “forever” candle heater build as shown in the video below. All you need is a used mason jar with a lid, two sizes of copper pipe, some special felt to act as the wick, denatured alcohol, and few drill bits. If you stick around to the end, he will also show how to turn this into a radiant heater.

WARNINGS: As he points out, the flame can be nearly invisible depending on the fuel used, and the copper pipe will get really hot, both of which will burn you severely. Thus, this candle heater cannot be left unattended. I would absolutely further contain this (and any DIY heater) in something metal, even if only a baking sheet in case it spills. Unfortunately, he doesn’t discuss how to extinguish the flame. My guess is that an inverted mason jar would do the trick, but these types of builds can sometimes be difficult to put out, so you’ll want to experiment with a small bit of fuel and your plan to extinguish the flame before filling the jar full. As with any heater, never fill the jar while it’s still burning and wait for everything to cool, too. You might also want some gloves around in case the mason jar gets hot to touch.

If you can get past all of that, then enjoy!

I feel like there are simpler designs for lamps and heaters. These require you to buy carbon felt, JB Weld, the copper pipe which thieves are always looking to steal, and there is no way to extinguish the flame plus the fact that you have to use a mini torch to light them in the first place.

Of course, many projects demand an investment in time and money, and this would only require one visit to a hardware store, maybe two if something is out of stock, which happens more often these days.

If you were to acquire all the materials and parts and tools, then these little heaters do provide a way to heat a room even if it is marginally and avoid freezing. But I’d still prefer the ability to more easily light and extinguish them.

I think this is a great idea. But what makes me nervous is if this would tip over with all that alcohol in it. You could have a big fire. What this needs to have on it is some stable base that fits
the jar so it can’t be tipped over. And also as Damien suggested have this device in a metal non-burnable pan.

I also suggest that when drilling holes in the pipe put it in a vise and also use a set to tap the hole before you drill it. So the drill bit can start without walking or coming off.

Just one more comment. This person Cash that flammable liquid right next to thai copper pipe candle. This is a potential fire hazard so he needs to take his teenager alcohol and set it far away before he lights this device.
