I dislike the heat more and more as I age. Here in the Midwest, when the thermometer climbs over 90 degrees in July and August, it’s brutal outside to the point where I won’t go outdoors unless I have to. And even then I ensure it’s early morning when I do.
But even indoors can be bad enough if it weren’t for our air-conditioner and de-humidifier running almost nonstop. Still, we try to tough it out during the hotter summer months because we don’t need our electric bill skyrocketing, either. So, I’m always on the lookout for easy ways to keep things cooler without a lot of extra expense.
And while the idea in the video below isn’t technically “free” because it requires you to pre-freeze something, like bottles of water or ice packs, it’s worth a try if you’re only wanting to keep a bedroom, for example, colder. Add in a simple box fan, which I recommend you have for power outages (assuming you have some sort of basic off-grid power to run it) as well as some salt, and you’ll have a simple makeshift air-conditioner setup in no time.
Unfortunately, I can’t embed the video on my website, but you can watch it on YouTube by clicking the link below. Enjoy!
