Trick Your Kids and Stockpile Their Candy!

Seeing as though today is one of the BEST holidays for kids, I figured I would also point out that today is a great time to potentially “trick” your kids and stockpile a portion of their free candy haul-ins. 😉 Let me explain…

In my opinion, most children get entirely too much candy in one day. So much so that they really shouldn’t be allowed free-reign over their haul. In fact, it should at least be doled out over time and, better yet, stockpiled.

If you’re forward-thinking you might therefore choose to take a portion of their candy haul and purposely store it long term. I know candy isn’t necessary for survival but I’ll bet it would be a very welcome treat for all during a SHTF situation where it’s obvious these items might not be readily available. Heck, they might even be a useful barter item.

While it would be best to stockpile hard candies I’m willing to bet most any candy will store for at least a year if vacuum sealed and stored like any long term food storage… and assuming the seal holds.

With that in mind, if you want the candy to last the longest without worry then avoid any soft candy, those with chocolate, and so on. Candies like M&M’s or Reese’s Peanut Butter cups would therefore be OFF the list. Candies like suckers, Jolly Ranchers, and Sweet Tarts would probably be good choices.

As for “tricking” your children, well, that’s up to you. Perhaps you can offer them a bribe for some of their candy? For us it would be something like time on the computer to play games. They’ll do darn near anything for that. 🙂

I was a bad dad. I would eat the things I liked out of my daughters basket. It’s a darn good thing she was never crazy about sweets. In fact after a couple of days it would sit neglected from then on. Half the time we had to throw out a bunch. (didn’t have vacuum sealing back then)The hard candies and such would be saved to go in my duffle back when my ship would deploy.
