We Planted Fruit Trees This Week

I’ll admit, it feels goods to get outside again, and perhaps more important, to do something that benefits our ability to survive what I fear is coming all too soon. To that end, we planted ten fruit trees earlier in the week:

We planted four apple trees, two pears, two cherries, and two peaches. We’re going to plant two more trees in the near future, and with as much space as we have, I’m hoping we’ll continue to add to that total. Personally, I wouldn’t mind having an entire orchard of fruit trees.

Yesterday, my father-in-law and son (who is currently on spring break) planted some blueberries, strawberries, and grapes while I took a much-deserved rest:

At some point, we’re going to add blackberries, more blueberries, and whatever else we can find to plant in that area. Ultimately, our goal is to produce enough berries ourselves to stop purchasing bags from Costco for our morning smoothies.

But that’s not all we’ve been up to. My father-in-law, Mel, had us redo the compost piles:

I tell him he has a strange obsession with compost because he’s always out there raking it out, turning the piles, watering, and who knows what else. I’m trying to learn, but I think he’s so accustomed to doing this stuff on his own that he doesn’t think to explain why or what he’s doing until it’s already done.

We’ve also started our many vegetable seeds, but they haven’t sprouted quite yet:

And, of course, we’ve been tilling the garden over and over in preparation for planting:

Next on the list is to get busy building a real chicken coop because our young chickens are growing quickly, and the mini coop I threw together won’t be big enough for them in a month, but that’s a post for another time.

I hope you and yours are getting outside, keeping busy, and preparing for hard times because they are coming.

Take care.
