Get Fewer Haircuts, Cut Your Own… Potentially Save $1000 per Year!

I’ve been fortunate that many years ago I started to lose my hair. Yes, I said fortunately. Most people would probably disagree with me seeing as though they want to keep their hair. I don’t. In fact, I’m plenty happy having a bald head for many reasons.

First, I make it look good:

DB-bald

Alright, making it look good is awfully subjective. 😉 By the way, my wife HATES this photo and really wants me to change it but it’s who I am.

Anyway, the point is that I’m sure I’ve saved hundreds if not thousands of dollars over the years choosing to shave my head instead of getting monthly (or perhaps bi-monthly) haircuts. At $15-20 for a basic haircut that’s hundreds of dollars per year. You can do the rest of the math. Granted, it’s not like razor blades are free but ever sine I learned to use a doubled edged safety razor I’ve saved a lot of money NOT purchasing disposable Mach 3 blades! That said, we still do buy some Mach 3 blades but not nearly as many as we did.

If you have young children–especially boys–you can shave their heads with an inexpensive set of hair clippers and save the cost of haircuts too. In fact, I’m lucky in that my niece lives with us and she willfully shaves my kids’ heads about once a month easily saving us money we would have otherwise spent on haircuts… or I would have just tried to shave their heads like mine…. so long as my wife wasn’t looking! Certainly, most men’s hair can be cut relatively well with a pair of hair clippers depending on the style. And if you’re so daring then perhaps a little education in hair cutting is in order.

As for the ladies’ hair, I’m at a loss there. My wife wouldn’t let me within ten feet of her hair if I dared to cut it, and I wouldn’t blame her either. 🙂 Unless your a confident person perhaps the best strategy is to simply let a ladies hair grow out longer than usual and purposefully not get it cut as often, especially since most women’s cuts tend to cost more than men’s… what a sham!

When you add it up for a family of four, let’s say, a typical month of haircuts could quickly add up to nearly a hundred dollars or more. Multiplied over a year, well, that’s quite a sum of money that maybe didn’t have to be spent but only YOU can decide that.

What say you? What have you done to save money on haircuts?

Too bad your wife is not comfortable with you as her stylist. My guy cuts my hair, better than what the stylists did to it at the salon. And I save hundreds each year being salon-free. And I get compliments on my hair, a lot of women are surprised he cuts it for me. I just tell them I have a good man who knows how to take care of his lady.

Haven’t had a hair cut since 1988. Hair on head is now about to my waist, doesn’t grow very fast, but if had left my beard uncut would have about 5 feet of it on floor during same time.

I’ve been cutting my own hair for 20 years. With scissors, Just look in the mirror grab some hair and cut going up the sides. Cut to length of thickness of your fingers all over. trim around your ears when done. Get someone to trim up the back and any mistakes. I’ve had worse haircuts from barbers I paid.Learned from a Chech I worked with who did his own and always looked well manicured.

I haven’t gotten to the part where I shave my whole head yet but 80 percent of it is already bald and I do shave the hairs that pop up in the bald spot. But your right, a multi blade razor does clog up with long hair quickly. On my head it works ok since the hairs are sparse and scattered. I use the Harry’s razor to shave my face and they are great for that.

Wow, I had no idea you were losing your hair, I thought you shaved it bald to make me mad. You have no idea how much money your Mother spends on her hair. So, when you put me in a nursing home I want Melanie to oversee my hair care needs. I don’t want the $10 haircut!! Love you, Mom

    1. Only shave it because I’ve got a head for it… you spent way too much time making my hair styled… and WAY too much hairspray! Ugh!! Love you too, Mom.

I either cut it myself by flipping my long hair over and cutting it best I can. And once in a while my sister cuts it for a professional job. I agree it saves me a lot on a monthly haircut. Thanks for the article.

I am the idiot of the year…..been spending $120 a month on hair coloring and a hair cut. Then I buy special oils, shampoos and such…….
Been going to the same stylist for years. Well, last time he burned my hair with the dye and the haircut is uneven and just a big mess…………think he is trying to drive off his old customers and get new ones that will spend even more money.
For a woman, it is easier to just let your hair grow long….can just brush and make a ponytail. Wham Bam and you are done!

    1. $120 a month? I’d have a heart attack if my wife spent that kind of $$$. Of course, she’d tell me what precisely I could do with my thoughts on the topic and I’d quickly get over it. 😉 I do like your willingness to let your hair grow out… maybe doing that every other month at the least could save some money for other uses.

Have cut my own hair now for over 40 years, so can you imagine the amount of money I have saved?! Have always had complements on my hair, so any woman can if they really wanted too!

$15 for a trim here, and the butcher wants a $5 tip. I use a Wahl hair trimmer and do the same high-and-tight that Mr. Sneed used to give at 8th and I. Not hard with three mirror medicine cabinet.

    1. I’d sure screw up my own haircut… that’s a bit reason why I use only a Bic these days!

This should get a chuckle till you realize how true it is.

I’ll make sure my wife doesn’t see this article since she is a licensed stylist. LOL Don’t cost me a penny for a haircut. If you are looking for a cheaper razor that is a ton better than a Mach 3 then I suggest https://www.harrys.com/ I’m quite happy since switching to that brand and it’s a whole lot cheaper. Instead of 3 blades there is 4 of them. Not sure what the difference is between 3 and 4 blades though. I just know I get a better shave. We are counting on my wife’s skills for barter if needed. She’s also been stockpiling on hair dye and the other stuff needed.

    1. I’ve been using a safety razor for regular “face” shaving but still find myself switching to a Mach 3 for my head because the Mach 3 (or disposable blades) actually curve a bit to fit my head curvature whereas the safety razor will NOT. I will check out the website you mention but I have tried 4 blade disposables in the past but don’t actually like them for my head because if I wait too long to shave and my hair stubble gets too long it won’t shave worth a darn.
