How to Download YouTube Videos for Free (using Real Player)

I’ve always wondered how to download YouTube videos for archiving but never could find a good answer. Whenever I half-heartedly looked I seemed to happen upon some shady website or maybe some tool that didn’t feel right either so I never tried any of them.

Fortunately, the other night I downloaded Real Player (the free version) so that I could try to watch old seasons of Fringe (actually my wife wanted to) but that plan didn’t work out so well. Anyway, I’d moved on to YouTube to watch the most recent subscription videos when a nifty little Real Player popup now hovered over the video asking if I wanted to “download this video.” I happily obliged and to my surprise, I found that the video had been archived in the Real Player library for later reference.

I immediately begain to salivate because I realized that this could potentially be a great way to save pertinent YouTube videos for long term survival use or just for late night boredom!

I then downloaded several more videos to see if anything funny would happen and nothing did. I also disabled my laptop internet connect to ensure I could still view the videos in Real Player and I could. I also noticed that Real Player would allow me to convert each video into MP3 format (which is audio only) if for some reason I wanted to… this is getting better by the minute. 🙂 It appears that I can even save these videos to a flash (USB) drive as well.

Of course, you’re going to want a high speed internet connection and plenty of hard drive space but this seems to be a legitimate and malware-free way to archive your favorite prepping YouTube videos. I still want to do some more research and testing over the next few months but so far the idea is on the up-and-up.

You can download Real Player here (just get the free version) and this is a Wiki that I found on how to do what I’m talking about. FYI, you can apparently downlaod videos from any number of other video websites, such as DailyMotion.com and others.

Hope this helps in your prepping adventures!
