What REAL Chicken Eggs Look Like

I’m back in Kansas City visiting my in-laws for a while and one of the many benefits of doing so is that they get farm-fresh eggs from a friend who raises their own chickens. When making breakfast this morning I realized that many of you may not know what REAL chicken eggs look like so I snapped a photo…

As you can see they’re VERY different from their store-bought counterparts. They’re different sizes, different colors, not always shaped perfectly, and the worst part… they’re DIRTY! Try selling these in the store. 🙂

Although you cannot see from the photo, the yolks are also quite a bit more “vibrant” in color than store-bought too. I don’t know why this is but it’s something I’ve noticed over the years.

The best part is that they’re probably significantly healthier for you too but I have no data to back that claim up. Anyway, I thought you might be interested to see what I consider REAL eggs if you’ve never seen them before.

Enjoy.

We buy eggs from our neighbor who washes them before selling to us. He has ducks and geese too. We only buy duck eggs now however the goose eggs were amazing but so large! Duck eggs are half again larger than chicken eggs at his farm. I smack them with a large knife to open them because the membrane is so tough. Scrambled duck eggs are a treat! We found that a scrambled goose egg would feed two for breakfast…

    1. Sometimes the eggs are well washed, sometimes not. Ducks eggs are just as good as chicken eggs, in my opinion, and I know some people who raise them exclusively.

  2. My girls lay all different sizes, shapes and colors. They roam free on our 3 acres and are very healthy. Eggs taste great, yoke color is vibrant like the sun at sunset. I get light blue colored eggs, white, brown, tan etc. No difference in taste. All are great. I LOVE my girls !!!
The eggs are dirty but keep them that way until you are ready to use them. At that point, wash them in warm water.

    1. Chicken eggs are one of the best single sources of food a family can have. I really wish more people would embrace raising backyard chickens like you have! Or, at the very least, encourage the practice by buying locally and from friends and neighbors.

Check our Mother Earth News for info on nutritional differences. Also don’t be fooled by the eggs laid by chickens fed “marigold extract” to improve the color, even though the bird probably didn’t leave the cage/pen. Nothing beats the nurtition of animals eating the way they were designed to.

Not coule — Couple of weeks. Spell check on the IPad bites me again.

Fresh eggs don’t spread out across the pan when broken into the pan. Though, if we leave a few to sit in the fridge for a coule of weeks they will run all over like the ones from the store.

If the chickens are getting fresh greens / plants and weeds, then the yolk is more orange than the yellow you see in store bought eggs.

As noted above, they do taste better, too.

Fresh eggs are tougher to peel when you are making boiled eggs for egg salad, so there is a trade. But, I’m willing to work around that.

    1. I think you’re right about the eggs not spreading out… guess I’ll have to pay more attention to that in the future!

  6. “Real” eggs also are much more flavorful.

Alas, most of us shop and eat with our eyes. If it looks pretty or presents well, we think it’s better than something blemished. Honestly, and I don’t know why, but the culls from my garden always seem to embody more flavor than the prettiest fruit on the vine. I read somewhere once where someone had found an egg that resembled having ears on it like the current president. No picture and I can only imagine what the hen must have felt laying it….

    1. No doubt grocery stores know we like pretty fruits and veggies, hence why they’re all very bright in color, uniform in shape and size, etc. The same can be said for all of our food to be honest.
