3 Easy Ways to EDC Duct Tape!

3-ways-edc-duct-tapeDuct tape is wonderful stuff. It’s so useful, in fact, that you should have some on you at all times and include it in your EDC. After all, if it was good enough for MacGyver, it’s good enough for me. Here’s my 3 most favorite ways to carry it…

1. Wrapped around a credit card

This is without a doubt the easiest way to carry duct tape on your person. Just wrap it around a credit card several times (lengthwise) and slip it in your wallet, purse, or whatever. You could use any card that you like, from an old library card to gift card. I’ve done this for years and have used my duct tape stash several times since.

Recently, I switched to using a business card because it can be trimmed down to more easily be the exact width of the duct tape roll AND it’s a bit more flexible which means it conforms to my ever-bulging wallet more easily. 🙂 In fact, that’s what’s pictured above. This way is by far the best way to get more duct tape into your EDC without much trouble. You can easily add several feet if you wanted but the above picture is of about 3-4 feet.

2. Wrapped around paracord (for your keychain)

If you didn’t want to add duct tape to your wallet or purse contents, you can also add it to your keychain. I should first note that it’s not always wise to add more weight to your keychain because doing so can cause trouble with the ignition system over time. I’ve had this happen when my wife used to carry dozens upon dozens of keys and whatnot on her keychains.

To make, the easiest way is to use an old, cheap Bic pen. First, remove the ink insert and cut the Bic pen in about half (measure to fit the width of duct tape to be sure). Work some paracord through the now empty 1/2 Bic pen, tie a stopper knot at one end and then a looped knot at the other. Wrap as much duct tape as you like around the Bic pen and attach the loop to your keychain.

3. Wrapped around a mini Bic lighter (could be for your keychain but doesn’t have to be)

If you want to double your prep space, you could alternatively wrap duct tape around a min Bic lighter as shown above. This strategy, however, allows for the least amount of duct tape to be added because of the bulk of the lighter.

Also, while there are a number of ways people suggest to attach the Bic to your keychain, the BEST way to do so without it coming loose is to work a very small keychain through the vent opening at the front of the lighter. You may need to widen the holes every so slightly using a very small drill bit, I did. Don’t worry, nothing should blow up.

Before attaching to your keychain, however, I would also wrap a small zip tie around the top and under the thumb rest to keep the lighter from unintentionally discharging fuel. The zip tie should be secure enough to not move easily but when needed, you will be able to slip it off.

That’s it! Hope it helps.
